Salem's Capital Ship: A Look Back at Washington Academy

A slide show presented by Al Cormier about the
dedication of the 1939 Salem Central School Building and other Salem activities during WW II
will take place in the town archive room in the Historic Salem Courthouse Community Center.

The slides, taken by former Salem historian E. Gordon Dillon, are the only known color
and black and white slides of this era, showing the dedication ceremony of the central school
corner stone, interior and exterior shots of the new building, the Salem Washington Academy
marching band, a Memorial Day parade, and other events.

Carl Clark Architects of Cortland, New York was the architect of the building, a Works
Progress Administration (WPA) project. He considered the building his “Capital Ship,” a term
applied to exceptional structures such as battleships of the period, and according to Clark, his
“finest work.”
