Washington County Making Strides Against Breast Cancer A Huge Success! The 8th annual Washington County Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event, in partnership with the American Cancer Society, held in Salem on Sunday, October 3 was a great success, raising over $30,000 with donations still coming in! Well over 450 registered walkers enjoyed a bright autumn day, surrounded by family and friends, walking in honor of all of the Breast Cancer Survivors in attendance, and in memory of those who have lost their fight with this disease. Entertainment by Al & Kathy Bain and Wendy Bordwell & Nathan Knowles was enjoyed by all as they gathered, and as they returned from their walk around picturesque Salem. Salem juniors Stephen Butler, Jessie Gibb and Rebecca Rogers kicked off the event with our National Anthem. Salem Town Supervisor Seth Pitts welcomed the walkers and Elaine Gibb, co-chairperson of the event, explained the different walk routes. She also noted that with the American Cancer Society’s pledge to work towards a world with more birthdays, the Survivors in attendance had celebrated a total of 250 birthdays since their diagnoses of breast cancer. Tammy Butler welcomed the Survivors for their group photo, by singing the Melissa Etheridge tune, “I Run for Life”. They were then led to the walk route by bagpipers Stachia and Anna Burns. The awards given were for Most Donations by an Individual: Carol Andrews, Most Donations by a Team: Gibbnorth, Most Donations by a Single Fundraising Event: Christian Bessett family and Most Unique TShirt Design: “Joyce’s Memory” Team. Thanks to ALL who made this one of our best years ever! |
