Ed Phillips House Fire

Salem Jan. 27, 2026

On Tuesday January 27, 2026 around 1:19pm

A Stewarts customer Kelvin Malone and two NYSEG employees James Motto Jr. and Cole Moore (and others) showed up and helped carry Ed Phillips out of the house and took him to Stewart’s to wait for EMS!

From Salem Fire Department-

On Tuesday January 27, 2026 around 1:19pm the Salem Volunteer Fire Dept and Salem EMS were dispatched to 229 North Main St for a structure fire.

The first alarm assignment also consisted of:  Greenwich Fire, Hebron Fire, Hartford Fire, Cambridge Fire, Shushan Fire, and the Salem Water Dept.

Salem Fire Chief Saunders arrived within 1 minute and confirmed a working structure fire and requested his 2nd alarm and his village tanker shuttle pre-plan to the scene because of exposure problems.

This brought in additional manpower and tankers from the following: Argyle Fire, Cossayuna Fire, Easton Fire, Rupert Fire, Middle Falls Fire, White Creek Fire, West Pawlet Fire, NYSEG, along with additional special requests from: Granville Fire, Schuylerville Fire, Victory Mills Fire, Cambridge EMS, Washington County Fire Coordinator’s, Washington County Fire Investigators, also other fire departments were providing cover assignments.

As all of this was happening Chief Saunders was asking everyone if they knew if the home owner was out in which we found out that he was still inside.

Two NYSEG employees who were across the street and 2-3 civilians all ran around to the back of the structure where they grabbed the owner from the inside back of the house and carried him over to Salem Stewarts where they awaited Salem EMS who arrived within 3-4 minutes.

The owner was transported to Saratoga Hospital and eventually transferred to West Chester Burn Unit with 2nd & 3rd degree burns over 14% of his body.

Civilians, EMS & firefighters then got the next-door neighbor out of her house as the flame impingement was happening on her place.

After they got her out, the fire depts. kept the fire from doing any damage to her residence.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Washington County Office of Public Safety Bureau of Fire Investigation and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Unit.
